To get rid of drain flies, find the drain they are breeding in, scrub out the slimy film inside it with a stiff brush, treat it with an enzyme-based drain cleaner for several nights, and keep the drain clean and in regular use. Killing the adult flies alone does not work, because the larvae live in the film inside the pipe and new flies keep hatching.
Drain flies (also called moth flies or sink flies) are small, fuzzy, moth-like flies about 2 to 5 mm long. They do not bite, but they are a common problem in humid Dubai and Sharjah bathrooms, kitchens, floor drains and guest bathrooms that are rarely used. They usually point to a dirty or slow drain, not a dirty home.
Use this guide as follows: start with the tape test in section 2 to find the drain, then follow the steps in section 4. If the flies are still there after three weeks of cleaning, or you smell sewage, go to section 8.

1. Confirm they are drain flies and find the drain
Several tiny flies look alike, and each one needs a different fix. Use this table to check what you have.
| Fly | What it looks like | Where you see it | Where it breeds |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drain fly | 2 to 5 mm, grey or tan, fuzzy moth-like wings, flutters or hops short distances | On bathroom and kitchen walls near drains, mostly at night | Slimy film inside drains and damp organic matter |
| Fruit fly | About 3 mm, tan with red eyes | Around ripe fruit, bins and recycling | Rotting or fermenting fruit and sugary spills |
| Fungus gnat | Slim, dark, mosquito-like | Around potted plants | Damp potting soil |
| Phorid fly | Small with a humped back, runs in quick jerks | Around drains, bins and damp spots | Rotting matter, sometimes leaking or broken pipes |
The tape test
- Before bed, stick a few strips of clear tape across each drain opening: shower, sink, floor drain, balcony drain and washing machine drain.
- Leave the tape overnight and do not run water.
- In the morning, check which tape has flies stuck to it. That drain is the breeding site.
- Also check the sink overflow hole, the air conditioner drain line and any rarely used toilet.

2. Why drain flies appear: the film inside your drains
Inside every drain there is a thin, slimy layer made of soap scum, hair, grease, food particles and bacteria. Drain fly larvae feed on this film, and adults lay their eggs in it. Under warm conditions the cycle from egg to adult can take roughly one to three weeks, which is why flies seem to appear from nowhere and return after you spray.
In UAE homes the usual causes are:
- Rarely used drains. Guest bathrooms, spare rooms and floor drains that get no water. After summer travel, drains can sit unused for weeks.
- Dry floor drains. A floor drain has a water seal. When it dries out, smells and insects can come up from the pipe.
- Soap scum, hair and grease. These build up in shower, sink and kitchen drains.
- Slow or partly blocked drains. Slow water means food for larvae is collecting.
- Air conditioner drain lines and trays. Damp, dirty condensate lines can breed flies.
- Restaurant and cafe kitchens. Grease in floor drains and grease traps, and damp bin areas.
3. Step-by-step: how to get rid of drain flies in the bathroom, sink and toilet
Work through these steps for every drain that is a suspect, not only the one you see flies near.
- Find the source. Do the tape test and check every drain, including floor drains, balcony drains and the AC drain.
- Remove visible gunk. Lift the drain cover, pull out hair and debris, and wash the cover.
- Scrub the pipe. Use a stiff drain brush or pipe brush and scrub the inside walls as far down as you can reach. Scrubbing breaks the film so that cleaners can work.
- Use an enzyme-based drain cleaner. Apply it as the label says, usually at night when the drain is not used, and repeat for several nights. Enzyme products break down the organic film that larvae feed on.
- Rinse with hot tap water. Rinse loosened material away. Boiling water can soften or damage some PVC pipes and fittings, so use very hot tap water instead.
- Catch the adult flies. Swat them, vacuum them up with a hose attachment, or place sticky traps near the drain. Do this alongside drain cleaning, never instead of it.
- Fix slow drains and leaks. A slow drain or a dripping pipe keeps the film wet. A plumber should check any leak, sewage smell or water backing up.
- Repeat and check. Do the tape test again after one week and after three weeks to confirm the breeding has stopped.

What to do for each type of drain
| Where the flies are | What to check | Extra fix |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom or shower drain | Hair and soap scum under the cover | Pull out hair, scrub, use enzyme cleaner, fit a fine-mesh strainer |
| Kitchen sink | Grease and food in the pipe and the sink trap | Scrub, use enzyme cleaner, keep grease out of the sink |
| Toilet | A rarely used toilet, dirty bowl rim or a slow leak around the base | Clean the bowl, flush regularly and check for leaks |
| Floor drain | A dry water seal and sludge at the bottom | Pour water in every few days, scrub and clean the grate |
| Balcony drain | Leaves, dust and standing water | Clear debris and fit a fine mesh cover |
| AC drain line or tray | Slime in the tray and pipe | Clean the tray and flush the line, or ask the AC technician |
4. Natural methods: what works and what does not
Most home remedies only kill adult flies. The ones that help are the ones that remove the film.
| Method | Does it help? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Scrubbing with a brush | Yes | Removes the film larvae feed on |
| Enzyme drain cleaner | Yes | Breaks down organic buildup when used as the label says and repeated |
| Fine-mesh strainers | Yes, for prevention | Catch hair and food before they enter the pipe |
| Hot tap water rinse | Partly | Rinses loosened material but does not remove the film alone |
| Boiling water | Limited | The effect is temporary, and it can damage some PVC pipes |
| Bleach | Limited | Does not clear the film, and must never be mixed with other cleaners |
| Baking soda and vinegar | Limited | Fizzes but does not scrub the film away |
| Apple cider vinegar trap | Small help | Catches some adults but does not stop breeding |
| Fly spray (aerosol) | Short-term only | Kills adults on the wall, not larvae in the pipe |
Safety: never mix bleach with ammonia, acids or other drain cleaners, because the mixture can release toxic gas. Ventilate the room and keep children and pets away while you clean.
5. How to get rid of drain fly larvae
Drain fly larvae are tiny, dark, worm-like and live in the film inside the drain, so you rarely see them. They can also be found in the slime around floor drains and in damp sludge at the bottom of a drain. To remove them, scrub the pipe walls, use an enzyme cleaner for several nights and rinse well. If you only spray the adults, the larvae will keep producing new flies.
6. How to stop drain flies coming back in Dubai homes
- Use every drain. Run water in unused bathrooms and floor drains for 30 seconds at least once a week, and flush unused toilets.
- After holidays. Run water in every drain and flush every toilet when you return.
- Clean monthly. Scrub shower, sink and floor drains once a month, and clean drain covers.
- Fit fine-mesh strainers. They stop hair and food from entering the pipe.
- Keep grease out. Wipe greasy pans with paper before washing, and do not pour oil down the sink.
- Fix leaks and slow drains early. Damp conditions keep the film alive.
- Clean AC trays and drain lines. Ask your AC technician to flush the line during servicing.
- Cover balcony drains. Use a fine mesh cover and clear leaves and dust.

7. When to call a professional
Call a licensed company if:
- Flies keep coming back after three weeks of proper drain cleaning.
- You see flies in several rooms, or large numbers at once.
- You smell sewage or see water backing up. This can mean a plumbing problem, so call a plumber too.
- You run a restaurant, cafe or shop and need the problem fixed before an inspection. See our commercial pest control service.
With Aura Pest Control the technician inspects the drains, confirms the fly and finds the breeding source, then treats the affected areas with a targeted method. We re-check after 3 days and again after 2 weeks, and our treatments come with a 3-month warranty. See our flies and mosquito control service, or our pest control contracts for regular visits. For other household pests, read our guide on how to get rid of pests in Dubai.
8. Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get rid of drain flies?
With proper cleaning of the drain, most homes see a big drop within one to two weeks. Check again after three weeks, because eggs and larvae in the film can keep the cycle going.
Are drain flies harmful?
Drain flies do not bite or sting. They are mainly a nuisance and a sign that organic buildup is rotting in a drain. They can carry bacteria from drains onto surfaces, so keep food areas clean and deal with the drain.
Why do I have drain flies in my bathroom?
There is usually a drain with film, hair and soap scum, or a drain that is rarely used or has a dry water seal. Use the tape test to find which one.
Do boiling water and bleach kill drain flies?
They can kill some adults or larvae they touch, but they do not remove the film that feeds the larvae, so the flies usually return. Boiling water can also damage some PVC pipes.
Are drain flies the same as fruit flies?
No. Drain flies are fuzzy and moth-like and live around drains. Fruit flies are tan with red eyes and gather around ripe fruit and bins.
Will drain flies go away on their own?
Usually not, while the drain stays dirty. Adults live for a short time, but new ones keep hatching until the breeding site is cleaned.
Do you treat drain flies in Dubai and Sharjah?
Yes. Aura Pest Control treats flies in homes and businesses in Dubai and Sharjah. See pest control in Dubai and pest control in Sharjah.
