how to get rid of bed bugs dubai featured

1. DIY steps + when to call a professional

To get rid of bed bugs in Dubai, confirm they are bed bugs, keep sleeping in the same room, bag and hot-wash all fabrics, vacuum and steam seams and cracks, seal the mattress in a bed bug encasement, and monitor with interceptor cups. Call a professional if bites continue after two weeks, if more than one room is affected, or if you live in a shared building.

Bed bugs are a common problem in flats, villas, hotels and shared accommodation across Dubai, Sharjah and the UAE. They are not a sign of a dirty home: they travel on luggage, clothes and furniture and feed on people, so clean homes get them too. The sooner you act, the easier they are to remove.

Use this guide as follows: if you have found one or two bugs in a single bed and the problem is new, the DIY steps below can work. If it is older, spread over several rooms or in a building with shared walls, book a licensed company for bed bug removal in Dubai, because partial treatment is the main reason bed bugs come back.

One bed and a new problem can be handled yourself. Several rooms or weeks of bites need a professional.

2. Confirm it is bed bugs (signs, bites, hiding spots)

Many bugs are mistaken for bed bugs, and treating the wrong pest wastes time. Look for the pests themselves first, because bites alone do not prove anything: reactions vary, and some people do not react at all.

SignWhat it looks like
Adult bed bugsAbout 5 to 7 mm long, flat, oval and reddish-brown, roughly the size of an apple seed
Nymphs (young)Smaller, paler, almost see-through until they feed
EggsTiny, pale and sticky, often in clusters in seams and cracks
Blood spots and dark specksRust-coloured spots on sheets, and small black dots (droppings) on mattress seams and headboards
Shed skinsEmpty, light brown shells left as nymphs grow
BitesItchy red marks, often in lines or clusters, usually on skin exposed during sleep
SmellIn heavier infestations, a sweet, musty odour

Where bed bugs hide

Start with mattress seams, piping and tags, then check the box spring, bed frame joints, headboard, bedside tables, sofa seams, curtain folds, skirting boards, wall sockets and behind picture frames. They hide close to where people sleep and come out mostly at night.

Lookalikes

Carpet beetle larvae, German cockroach nymphs and fleas are often mistaken for bed bugs. If you can catch one, put it in a sealed bag or stick it to clear tape and send a photo to a pest professional. At Aura Pest Control you can send a photo on WhatsApp for a first opinion.

Look for adults, pale nymphs, tiny eggs, dark spots and shed skins along seams.

3. Step-by-step: isolate, wash, vacuum, steam, treat

Work through these steps in order. Do the whole bedroom in one day if you can, and repeat the checks over the next two to three weeks.

  1. Stay calm and stay in the same room. Do not move to the sofa or another bedroom, because bed bugs follow people and you will spread them.
  2. Isolate and bag. Strip the bed and put bedding, curtains and clothes straight into sealed plastic bags. Carry the bags directly to the washing machine, and do not put them on other furniture.
  3. Wash and dry on high heat. Wash fabrics in the hottest water the label allows, then dry them on the highest heat for at least 30 minutes. Guidance from environmental agencies is that washing alone does not kill them, and the dryer is the step that does. Items that cannot be washed can go in the dryer on high heat.
  4. Vacuum. Use the crevice tool along mattress seams, bed frame joints, headboards, skirting and cracks. Empty the vacuum into a sealed bag and put it in an outside bin straight away.
  5. Steam. Run a steamer slowly along seams, tufts, bed frame joints and cracks so the heat reaches into the gaps. Keep it moving and check the label first to avoid damaging fabrics or finishes.
  6. Encase the mattress and box spring. Use covers that are made and tested for bed bugs, not a normal mattress protector. Leave them on for at least a year, because bed bugs can survive for many months without feeding.
  7. Place interceptor cups. Put one under each leg of the bed. They trap bugs trying to climb up or down and show you whether numbers are falling.
  8. Reduce hiding places. Clear clutter around the bed, move the bed a few centimetres from the wall, and do not store items underneath.
  9. Treat the room with the right method. Home insecticides must be registered for bed bug use and used strictly as the label says. In the UAE, we recommend that chemical treatment is done by a licensed pest control company. Never use fumigation tablets or unlabelled chemicals in a flat: these have caused fatal poisonings in the region.
  10. Monitor and repeat. Check the cups, seams and sheets every few days for two to three weeks. Eggs can hatch about a week or so after treatment, so one round is rarely enough.

4. What does NOT work (sprays alone, moving rooms)

  • Supermarket sprays and bug bombs on their own. Bed bugs hide in cracks where spray and fog do not reach, and bombs can push them into other rooms and walls. Sprays can help as part of a plan, but they rarely solve the problem alone.
  • Moving to another room. Bed bugs follow their food source, so you carry them with you.
  • Washing without drying on high heat. Cool or warm washes can leave bugs alive.
  • Leaving a mattress in the sun for a day. The heat is uneven and may not reach the seams and inside the mattress. Treat it as an extra, not a treatment.
  • Home remedies such as essential oils, perfumes or powders. They do not reliably reach hidden eggs and bugs, and some can irritate skin and lungs.
  • Throwing away your mattress straight away. Moving an infested mattress through the building can spread bugs, and a new mattress in an untreated room is quickly infested again. Encase, treat and monitor instead.
  • Treating only one room. If bed bugs have spread, the neighbouring rooms must be inspected and treated as well.

5. Why Dubai flats, hotels and labour accommodation re-infest

Bed bugs are often removed and then come back. In the UAE the usual reasons are:

  • Shared walls, pipes and ducts. In towers and older blocks, bed bugs move between flats through gaps around pipes, sockets and cable runs. Treating one unit while the neighbour stays untreated invites re-infestation.
  • High tenant turnover and furnished rentals. Frequent move-ins and move-outs bring luggage and furniture from many places.
  • Second-hand furniture and mattresses. These are a common way for bed bugs to enter a home.
  • Shared rooms and bunk beds. In labour and staff accommodation many beds, bags and people are in the same space, so one bug can spread quickly and treatment must cover the whole room.
  • Frequent travel. Hotels, airports and visiting family bring bed bugs home in suitcases and bags.
  • Partial treatment and no follow-up. Eggs survive the first round and hatch afterwards, which is why a follow-up visit matters.

If you live in a building, tell your landlord or building management as soon as you confirm bed bugs, and ask neighbours to check their beds. In hotels or serviced apartments, report it to management and ask for a different room that is not next to or directly above or below the affected one.

6. Professional treatment: what happens on the day

If you book bed bug control with Aura Pest Control, this is what to expect:

  1. Inspection. The technician checks mattress seams, the bed frame, headboard, bedside tables, sofas, skirting, sockets and nearby rooms, and confirms that the pest is bed bugs and how far they have spread.
  2. Treatment plan. We explain the areas to be treated, the products and methods to be used, and how long to stay out or ventilate.
  3. Targeted treatment. Treatment is applied to the places where bed bugs hide and travel, not sprayed everywhere. Depending on the property, steam or other methods may be added. Ask your technician which methods are used.
  4. Aftercare. You get instructions for the first days, for example when to re-enter, how to wash and store bedding, and what to leave undisturbed.
  5. Follow-up checks. We re-check after 3 days and again after 2 weeks to confirm activity has dropped, and our treatments come with a 3-month warranty.

How to prepare for the visit

  • Strip the bed and bag bedding and clothes, then wash and dry on high heat as soon as possible.
  • Clear the floor around the bed and empty bedside tables and drawers.
  • Do not spray or fog before the technician arrives, because it can scatter bugs and make the inspection harder.
  • Do not move furniture into other rooms.
  • Tell the technician about children, pets, pregnancy and breathing problems.

Book a free inspection and we will tell you what the treatment involves before you decide. For other homes problems, see our guide to home pest control in Dubai.

7. Prevention while travelling and after guests

When you travel

  • Inspect the room on arrival: pull back the sheets and check the mattress seams and the headboard.
  • Keep your suitcase on a luggage rack or in the bathroom, not on the bed or the carpet.
  • Do not put clothes in the hotel drawers if you see signs of bed bugs.
  • When you get home, unpack straight into the washing machine or dryer, and dry on high heat. Vacuum the suitcase and keep it away from the bedroom.

At home and with guests

  • Use a bed bug mattress encasement, so there are fewer hiding places and any bugs are easy to see.
  • Check second-hand furniture and mattresses carefully before you bring them in, or avoid them.
  • Ask guests to keep their bags off beds and sofas, and wash bedding after guests leave.
  • Reduce clutter near the bed and check the seams every few weeks.

8. Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get rid of bed bugs?

A small, new infestation can be under control in a few weeks, but a heavier or older one can take longer. Eggs hatch after treatment, so expect more than one visit and several weeks of monitoring. Follow-up checks and encasements are what make the result last.

Can I get rid of bed bugs myself?

Sometimes, if it is caught early in a single bed. The steps in this guide (bagging, hot washing and drying, vacuuming, steaming, encasements and monitoring) can work for a small problem. If bugs are in several rooms, in a shared building, or still there after two weeks, a professional treatment is the safer choice.

How do bed bugs enter a flat in Dubai?

Mostly on luggage, clothes, second-hand furniture and mattresses, and from neighbouring flats through gaps around pipes, sockets and walls. Visitors and hotel stays can also bring them in.

Do I need to throw away my mattress?

Usually not. Most mattresses can be treated and sealed in a bed bug encasement. Throwing it away can spread bugs through the building, and a new mattress in an untreated room will be infested again. Replace a mattress only if it is badly damaged.

Are bed bugs a sign that my home is dirty?

No. Bed bugs feed on people, not dirt, so they appear in clean flats, villas and hotels.

Do bed bugs spread diseases?

Bed bug bites are itchy and can cause skin irritation or sleep loss, but bed bugs are not generally known for spreading disease. If you have a strong reaction or signs of infection, speak to a doctor.

Do you treat bed bugs in Sharjah and across the UAE?

Yes. Aura Pest Control treats bed bugs in Dubai and Sharjah. See pest control in Dubai and pest control in Sharjah.
