To get rid of cockroaches, remove their food, grease and water, seal the gaps they hide in, and place gel bait where you see them. Sprays kill the roaches you can see, but gel bait is what reaches the hidden ones and the rest of the nest. Check again after one week and after two to three weeks, because new nymphs keep hatching.
Cockroaches are one of the most common pests in Dubai and Sharjah homes. They hide in kitchens, bathrooms, drains, shared building shafts and cardboard from deliveries. Seeing them does not mean your home is dirty, but leaving them means the problem grows quickly.
Use this guide as follows: identify the cockroach in section 2, follow the steps in section 3, and use sections 5 and 6 for the room you have the problem in. If you see roaches in the daytime or in several rooms, go straight to section 10.

1. Identify the cockroach
Different cockroaches need slightly different treatment, so check which one you have.
| Type | What it looks like | Where you find it | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| German cockroach | About 12 to 15 mm, light brown, two dark stripes behind the head | Kitchens, bathrooms, behind appliances | The most common indoor problem and a very fast breeder |
| American cockroach | Large, about 35 to 40 mm, reddish brown | Drains, shafts, car parks, basements | Can fly short distances and often comes up from drains |
| Small cockroaches in the kitchen | Tiny and pale | Near food, sinks and cabinets | Usually young German cockroaches (nymphs), which means they are breeding nearby |
| Big or flying cockroaches | Large and dark | Balconies, bathrooms, near drains | Usually American cockroaches coming in from outside or from drains |
Signs of an infestation: droppings that look like pepper or coffee grounds, small brown egg cases, a musty smell, smear marks, and cockroaches seen in the daytime. Daytime sightings usually mean the nest is crowded.

2. Step-by-step: how to get rid of cockroaches
- Find where they hide. Check at night with a torch behind the fridge and stove, under the sink, inside cabinet hinges, around the dishwasher and in drains. Sticky traps help show where activity is heaviest.
- Remove food and grease. Clean the kitchen every night, wipe grease behind the stove, seal food and pet food, and take the bin out daily.
- Cut off water. Fix dripping taps and leaks, dry the sink and bathroom floor, and do not leave wet sponges or cloths overnight.
- Seal the gaps. Fill cracks around pipes, skirting boards and cabinets with sealant, and fit door sweeps.
- Place gel bait. Put small dots, about the size of a grain of rice, in hiding spots, near water and along cabinet edges. Do not spray near the bait, because spray can make roaches avoid it.
- Add sticky traps. Put them along walls and under the sink to catch roaches and track progress.
- Vacuum and dispose. Vacuum dead roaches, droppings and egg cases, then seal the bag and take it outside.
- Treat the hidden ones. If roaches are in several rooms or keep returning, a professional treatment reaches the cracks and wall voids you cannot.
- Re-check. Look again after one week and after two to three weeks, and repeat the bait if you still see them.
3. What kills cockroaches instantly, and what does not
Nothing kills a whole infestation instantly. Some methods kill the roaches you can see at once, and others work slowly but reach the nest.
| Method | Speed | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Soapy water spray | Instant on contact | Kills roaches you can see, not the nest |
| Vacuuming | Instant | Removes roaches and egg cases, so empty the bag outside |
| Aerosol insecticide spray | Fast on contact | Kills visible roaches, but can scatter the rest and make bait less effective |
| Gel bait | Days to a couple of weeks | Roaches eat it and it spreads through the nest |
| Boric acid or borax | Slow, over days | A stomach poison that needs careful use, see our home remedies guide |
| Professional treatment | Days, with follow-up | Targeted treatment of hiding places and nests, with checks after |
4. How to get rid of cockroaches room by room
| Where | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen | Behind appliances, under the sink, cabinet hinges | Deep clean, gel bait in hiding spots, seal gaps |
| Bathroom | Drains, behind toilets, under the sink | Dry surfaces, clean drains, fix leaks, add bait away from water |
| Bedroom or living room | Skirting boards, behind furniture, wardrobe corners | Remove food from rooms, vacuum, bait and seal gaps |
| Fridge, microwave, dishwasher | Motor areas and rubber seals | Unplug, empty and clean, never spray inside, and call a professional if they are in the motor area |
| Cabinets | Hinges, corners and behind drawers | Empty, clean and bait the corners |
| Car | Seats, floor mats, door pockets | Remove food and bags, vacuum, use sticky traps and treat the home too if they came from there |
5. How to kill cockroach eggs
Cockroach eggs are protected inside a hard case called an ootheca. A German cockroach female carries the case until the eggs are almost ready to hatch, and an American cockroach glues hers to a hidden surface. Most sprays do not get through the case.
- Vacuum visible cases and seal and bin the bag outside.
- Use gel bait so the nymphs that hatch eat it and die.
- Ask for an insect growth regulator (IGR) in professional treatment, which stops young roaches from maturing and breeding.
- Repeat after two weeks, because cases hidden in cracks hatch later.
- Do not crush a female carrying a case. She can release it, so use a tissue or vacuum her up.

6. Natural ways to get rid of cockroaches
Cleaning, sealing gaps, soapy water, sticky traps and careful use of boric acid or food-grade diatomaceous earth in cracks help, but they are slower and less reliable than gel bait. Some popular remedies do not work at all, and some, such as mothballs, are unsafe. Read our full guide on home remedies for cockroaches.
7. How long does it take?
Gel bait usually starts reducing the roaches within days, and most light infestations drop noticeably in one to two weeks. Heavy infestations can take longer and need repeat treatment. Treat the problem as solved only after three to four weeks with no sightings.
8. How to stop cockroaches coming back
- Clean nightly. Wipe counters, the stove and floors before bed.
- Seal food. Use airtight containers for food and pet food.
- Take out waste daily and keep bins closed.
- Fix leaks and dry sinks and bathrooms.
- Break down cardboard. Roaches and egg cases arrive in delivery boxes.
- Check drains and shafts. Keep drain covers fitted and covered.
- Seal gaps around pipes, doors and cabinets.
- Plan regular checks in villas, shared buildings and food businesses.

9. When to call a professional
Call a licensed company if:
- You see cockroaches in the daytime or in several rooms.
- The problem returns after you used bait and cleaned.
- You find cockroaches inside appliances or wall voids.
- You have children, pets or someone with asthma at home and want a safer plan.
- You run a restaurant, cafe or shop that needs service reports.

10. Frequently asked questions
How do I get rid of cockroaches permanently?
You need to remove food, water and hiding places, seal entry points and treat with bait or a professional treatment, then keep checking. One spray is not a permanent fix, because the nest and egg cases remain.
How do I get rid of cockroaches in the UAE?
The steps are the same, but warm weather, shared drains and shafts and deliveries make cockroaches common here. Focus on kitchens and drains, use gel bait, seal gaps and plan regular checks. Aura Pest Control treats homes across Dubai and Sharjah.
Can cockroaches kill you?
Cockroaches do not kill people directly. They can contaminate food and surfaces with germs, and their droppings and body parts can trigger allergies and asthma, especially in children.
Should you kill cockroaches?
Yes, if you see them indoors. A single cockroach usually means more are hiding, so deal with the source, not only the one you see.
Do cockroaches lay eggs when killed?
A crushed female carrying an egg case can release it, and the eggs can sometimes still hatch. Use a tissue or a vacuum, and bin it sealed.
Does killing a cockroach attract more?
There is no reliable proof that squashing one brings more. More cockroaches usually appear because there is food, water and shelter, so clean up and remove those.
Does cockroach spray work?
Sprays kill the roaches they touch, but they rarely reach the nest and can scatter the rest. Gel bait or professional treatment works better.
Why do I see cockroaches during the day?
Cockroaches are mostly active at night, so daytime sightings usually mean the nest is crowded or food is short. Treat it as a sign of a larger problem.
